At the 2016 DrupalCamp, I gathered information about the Drupal multisite approach at the University of Colorado-Boulder. My team liked the approach, baked in a few modifications of our own, and were adding sites to the multisite within two months.

We'll talk about what we liked about the University of Colorado-Boulder model over a previously multisite attempt that was too complicated and too buggy, as well as what we changed in their approach to suit the University of Northern Iowa server structure. We now host more than 200 sites in our multisite, and updating the majority of modules and Drupal Core takes minutes instead of days.

Our approach to a multisite, and why it works well (at least for us)
